Compliance Isn’t a Sprint. It’s a Marathon.

Sydney has spent the weekend talking about one thing: the marathon.

Thousands of runners. Kilometres of road closures. Months of preparation. Training plans, checkpoints, support crews and one very long road to the finish line.

And, as workplace compliance metaphors go, it’s actually a pretty good one.

Because compliance isn’t something you smash out once, tick off the list and never think about again.

It’s a marathon.

The starting line is not the finish line

Writing your emergency procedures is important.

Completing your training is important.

Putting up evacuation diagrams, inspecting equipment and assigning wardens are all important.

But none of those things mean compliance is finished.

  • Workplaces change.
  • People leave.
  • New staff start.
  • Furniture moves.
  • Equipment gets relocated.
  • Processes change.
  • Risks change.

And the emergency plan that made perfect sense twelve months ago might not reflect what is actually happening in your workplace today.

Good compliance is less about one huge burst of activity and more about keeping things moving.

Small checks make a big difference

Nobody prepares for a marathon by doing absolutely nothing for eleven months and then running 42 kilometres on race day.

Yet compliance can sometimes be treated that way.

A review suddenly becomes urgent because an audit is coming.

Training gets booked because somebody notices half the wardens have left.

Documents get pulled out of a folder and everyone realises they haven’t been updated since 2023.

The better approach is much less dramatic.

  • Regular reviews.
  • Small updates.
  • Scheduled training.
  • Routine checks.
  • Clear responsibilities.

A little bit of attention throughout the year is far easier than trying to fix everything at once.

You also need the right tools

A marathon runner doesn’t turn up with no shoes, no water and no idea where the course goes.

The same principle applies to workplace compliance.

Your team needs practical tools they can actually use.

Not a 150-page document nobody wants to open.

Not templates that require a compliance degree to understand.

And not a collection of random files scattered across someone’s desktop.

Simple checklists, templates, registers and resources make it much easier to keep the basics under control.

Because the easier compliance is to manage, the more likely it is to actually get done.

Keep moving in the right direction

You don’t need to overhaul your entire compliance system every Monday morning.

You just need to keep checking that the things you have in place still work.

  • Review the documents.
  • Check the training.
  • Look at your emergency information.
  • Make sure responsibilities are clear.
  • Fix the small things before they become big things.

Because when it comes to compliance, consistency will get you much further than one heroic sprint ever will.

And thankfully, there’s no 42.2-kilometre run required.
